Rep. Al Ott Attends Commission's 37th Annual Meeting to Celebrate Niagara Escarpment
On April 30, 2009 the Commission held both its regular Quarterly Commission meeting and its 37th Annual Commission Meeting at the Commission's offices in Menasha. In addition to its regular business, such as approving the nominations for Commission Chair and Vice-Chair (Dick Koeppen - Waupaca County and Marshal Geise - Shawano County respectively) for another term, Commission staff gave an overview of the accomplishments which occurred over the past year. As part of this annual celebration, Rep. Al Ott (R-Forest Junction) attended the meeting to present the Commission with a framed plaque of the recently approved Assembly Joint Resolution 1. The resolution is recognition of the Niagara Escarpment and proclaims the year 2010 as "Year of the Niagara Escarpment". Rep. Ott had been working with the Niagara Escarpment Resource Network (NERN) for approximately a year to discuss ongoing land management and conservation issues affecting this unique regional resource. As a result, Rep. Ott felt that it was time to elevate the public's level of awareness and subsequently authored and sought co-sponsorship for the legislative proclamation. AJR-1 was adopted by the Wisconsin State Assembly on February 24, 2009. The Wisconsin State Senate concurred on March 24, 2009. The Niagara Escarpment is a 650 mile long geologic feature of global importance that stretches across Wisconsin, Michigan, Ontario and New York. In Wisconsin, the Niagara Escarpment spans a distance of over 230 miles and reaches from Waukesha County to the Door County Peninsula. It runs through the counties of Door, Kewaunee, Brown, Manitowoc, Calumet, Fond du Lac, Dodge and Waukesha. Locally, it is known as the "Ledge." The Niagara Escarpment is a prominent component throughout much of the eastern part of the State. Peninsula and High Cliff State Parks, two of Wisconsin's most visited State Parks, lie along the Niagara Escarpment corridor. "I am especially pleased that the Niagara Escarpment is getting this well deserved recognition," Ott said in a previous press release. "Assembly Joint Resolution 1 will promote awareness and education to this distinctive landscape. The Niagara Escarpment will be acknowledged as an essential geologic and natural resource to our State." Ott added, "This unique natural element is an important ecologic, historic, economic, cultural and recreational foundation." The Commission and the Niagara Escarpment Resource Network wishes to thank Rep. Ott and all of the other resolution co-sponsors for their support of this regional effort. Currently, the Commission is working on a number of projects and initiatives resulting from the legislative proclamation, including the development of a Niagara Escarpment Greenway Plan, a Niagara Cuesta Tourism effort, and the development of a corridor-long recreational bicycle route.
